We live and breathe digital. We communicate online. We work online. We learn and socialize online. That’s why good spelling is crucial, now more than ever. But if you disagree, here are five reasons why you won’t enjoy using Ultimate Spelling.
You don’t like easy, step-by-step guidance

Forget everything you ever knew about learning to spell well. It’s no longer dull. It’s no longer repetitive. Welcome the new era of spelling, where learning to spell correctly is possible through interactive activities and fun games. An era where you get real support by spelling experts and video tutorials to help you really master spelling.

But if you don’t like being shown how to use scientifically designed exercises to learn spelling easily, then you won’t like the Ultimate Spelling system.

You’re tired of interactive, fun games

Fun games, quizzes and customized spelling games with your own custom lists make learning to spell a million times more fun. Word Search, Super Scrambler and Save Stick Man are among the most popular Ultimate Spelling games you can play and get addicted to. Why spend time studying boring, bottomless word lists when you practice your orthography skills with fun games and interactive activities?

On the other hand, if you hate having fun while you learn, you definitely won’t like the Ultimate Spelling activities and addictive games.
You aren’t interested in how much progress you’re making

Track your progress from Day 1 to Day 128 with Ultimate Spelling’s advanced monitoring technology. Get detailed reports on the activities, study time and insights of the words mastered and your spelling success. The overview of your spelling activity gives you a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction and feeds your drive to master even more words.

But if you don’t really care how well you’re doing, or how well you spell, then you won’t get excited by Ultimate Spelling’s informative charts and graphs.

You don’t believe in research results or scientific studies

Every activity on Ultimate Spelling is backed by research done by esteemed scientists and educators around the world, and developed by spelling experts into a program that helps ensure you make the best possible progress in the least amount of time. The activities are designed on the learning principles of deep processing, operant conditioning, and reward structures, and make learning happen in a fun, interactive environment.

However, if you’re one of those people who doesn’t trust accredited scientific institutions, then you’re not going to believe how quickly these same principles will work in making you a better speller.

You’re not into social engagement

Sharing your success is half the fun of learning to spell. That’s why Ultimate Spelling has added the coveted feature of social sharing to its already interactive system. Now you can share your every spelling milestone with friends and family, further increasing your motivation to study harder and accomplish more!

On the other hand, if you don’t use any social media and prefer to keep to yourself, then this aspect of Ultimate Spelling isn’t for you.

In fact, if you feel your spelling is fine the way it is, Ultimate Spelling is not for you. But if you want to write better, and eliminate errors from your professional documents and personal communication, then it’s time to get Ultimate Spelling and watch your writing transform!

There’s really no excuse not to improve your spelling with Ultimate Spelling. It’s fun, it’s fast. and it works. Whether you believe it or not.

People’s capacity of proper spelling is inversely proportional to the increased use of computers for typing purposes. You might think that MS Word’s spelling suggestions make you better, but the reality is different: it makes you a passive typist who doesn’t care too much about proper spelling. When you try writing an essay by hand, you’ll notice that big words are really challenging to write correctly.

Do not despair! English spelling is difficult and no one will judge you for relying on software suggestions. There are some unexpected practices that can help you master this skill, so you will become better in typing and writing by hand at the same time.

          1) Identify the parts of words you commonly misspell

When you realize that you’re constantly misspelling a particular word, you’ll notice that you are making the same mistake with other words that contain the same part you misspell. That’s especially true when you type on a computer keyboard, simply because your fingers have developed a habit.

Pay attention to this pattern and you’ll be able to fight against it.

          2) Rely on your visual memory!

You can’t spell complex words? Open the dictionary or write it in a notebook. Stare at the particular word you usually misspell. Look at it and remember what it looks like. Don’t try to find logic in the way the words are arranged; just try to remember the appearance of the written word. Visual memory is very powerful! When you write the word yourself, you’ll immediately notice if something is wrong.

          3) Try pronouncing it!

The previous technique was purely visual, but let’s include your logic for this one. If you suspect that a word you wrote is spelled incorrectly, try reading it aloud. Pay attention to each section of the word and don’t pronounce it as you remember it, but as you spelled it. This will give you a clue if you got things right.

          4) Keep a dictionary!

This may seem like a silly practice for kids, but you’ll notice its effectiveness as soon as you start relying on it. When you notice that you misspelled a certain word, include it in your list. Write it correctly, and then note the mistake you made. You can leave some space to include other mistakes you might make in future. Keep this personal dictionary as a reminder of your flaws, as well as the progress you make.

          5) Practice in color!

Here is another childish method that’s really effective: write the syllables in different colors. You’ll notice that the same syllables are spelled identically in different words. For example, the syllable ter is present in different words, such as water, waiter, writer, etc. The first syllables of these examples are also present in different words. When you identify them by color, you won’t have trouble memorizing the way they are spelled.

          6) Do not write in capital letters! Use cursive script!

Have you noticed that you’re writing the word in capital letters when you want to remind yourself about its proper spelling? Don’t do that! When you write it in this way, it won’t have the form that your mind needs to stick to. If you’re writing complex words in your notebook, use cursive script. The letters will flow and you’ll soon start writing them automatically. Of course, it takes a lot of practice before you get to that state.

          7) Play games!

Gaming could be a very powerful technique in education in general according to essay writing blog ScholarAdvisor. So Scrabble, Word Pin, Boggle… there are awesome word games that you can play with friends. If you are a loner, solve crossword puzzles; they are great for learning proper spelling. You can also install different apps on your phone, so you’ll be able to practice whenever you feel like it.

Unexpected Means Do Not Exclude the Traditional Rule: Practice!

Remember: spelling skills don’t come naturally. No matter how many techniques you implement, you won’t achieve success if you try them only once. Playing a game of Scrabble won’t make you a spelling expert, but a lot of practice and commitment certainly will.

If you write and type as much as you can, you’ll be able to spot the most common mistakes and fix the patterns in your brain that are causing you to repeat them. Reading is also important! Instead of learning new words by using the dictionary, you’ll boost your vocabulary much more effectively by reading books, magazines, and newspapers.

Aahhh … don’t you love the English language? It’s full of fancy words. Words that are tricky, words that are unpredictable – words that I can almost guarantee you will misspell.

The Center of Reading Research has looked into the English words that people are the least familiar with, using an online vocabulary test offered by Ghent University.

The participants had to press the “J” key if the word flashing before their eyes on the computer screen was a proper English word, and the “F” key if they didn’t know the word. Fewer than 3 in every 100 participants knew words like gossypol and alsike. Are you one of these people?

Here are the definitions of some of these obscure words. Be sure to learn their correct spelling in case you ever need to use them!

“chersonese” – This word comes from the Greek “??????????” which means peninsula. A peninsula is a piece of land that has one of its four sites connected to the mainland of a territory while the other three are bordered by water.

“dasyure” – According to the Dictionary.com website, dasyure is “any of several nocturnal, carnivorous marsupials of the genus Dasyurus and related genera, of Australia, Tasmania, and nearby islands, typically having a reddish or olive-brown coat marked with white spots.”

“pyknic” – This is not an archaic spelling of the word “picnic.” According to the Oxford dictionary, “pyknic” is etymologically derived from the Greek word “??????” which means thick. It describes any living species with a tendency to get fat and have a “stocky physique or a rounded body and head.”

“kalian” – A word of Persian origin, it refers to a Persian tobacco pipe that has the smoke go through water before drawing and inhaling the smoke. You might be more familiar with the terms “Hookah” or “Shisha”, the waterpipe use for smoking tobacco.

“Yogh” – This is a phonological term that describes a palatal fricative widely used in Middle English. Its sound approximates the Modern English sound of the semivowel “y” as in the word“young.”

“didapper” – The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines didapper as “a dabchick or other small grebe.” It’s the shortened form of dive-dapper.

“ossify” – The process of making something impermeable to change. The word means to become hard like a bone, or to transform into bone.

“stibnite” – The Merriam-Webster dictionary offers this word definition for stibnite: “a mineral that consists of the trisulfide of antimony and occurs in orthorhombic lead-gray crystals of metallic luster or in massive form.”

“penurious” – This is what many young people are by the end of each month: extremely poor or poverty-stricken. It also means parsimonious, having an unwillingness to spend money, or being stingy.

“skullduggery” (also written with one “l”) – Dictionary.com defines “skullduggery” as trickery; it’s an informal word used to describe an underhanded deal.

“brummagem” – This is a word that refers the English dialect spoken in Birmingham, or just relating to the city of Birmingham as a whole.

There you have it! 11 obscure words you can learn to spell, and impress everyone with your spelling knowledge!

Here at TopTenReviews we reviewed Ultimate Spelling and awarded it the Gold Award with an overall rating of 9.88 out of 10. TopTenReviews praised the “in-depth progress reports” and large database of available words. The overall verdict was that the software would be very helpful for children and young adults who want to improve their spelling, although it might not appeal to very young kids.

Teaches a Wide Range of Words

Ultimate Spelling’s database contains more than 160,000 words, which are organized into lists so that learners can easily decide which words to focus on. There are lists for children in grades one to 10, as well as specialized lists that help students prepare for the GRE, SAT, or TOEFL exams. Users can also build their own lists of words to suit their own purposes. TopTenReviews praised the wide range of utility that this spelling software provides. The review also noted that Ultimate Spelling teaches far, far more words than any of the other top-rated spelling software products.

Teaches More than Just Spelling

As well as teaching users to spell words correctly, Ultimate Spelling also teaches the pronunciation and meaning of words. Each word in the database is accompanied by links to web resources that explain the word’s meaning and context. The Word Explorer feature connects words to their synonyms, which allows learners to focus on particular subject areas and improve their vocabulary. Users can even click the Etymology tab to find out about the origins of words, which is an interesting feature.

Fun to Use

Ultimate Spelling was one of the most fun to use. The spelling software includes a number of fun games, including Save Stick Man, Crazy Clues, Super Scrambler, Word Search, Junior Scrabble and Word Tag. These games give learners an opportunity to test their knowledge and have fun playing with words. We were also impressed by the two key learning exercises of Ultimate Spelling, Spelling Workout and Flash Cards. Spelling Workout gives users a chance to correct their mistakes, so that they learn from them and don’t keep making the same errors over and over again.

Easy to Track Progress

TopTenReviews gave Ultimate Spelling a full 10 out of 10 rating for its progress reports. Users can view their progress, with graphs showing how many words they have mastered, as well as their spelling success rate. The spelling software also monitors how much time users have spent on each type of activity. Multiple users can create accounts and track their progress individually.

Helpful Technical Support

Ultimate Spelling offers technical support to help users who are having problems. As noted in the review, it is easy to connect to an online helpdesk, which provides a useful knowledge base and FAQs. Users whose questions are not answered on the website can ask a question via an online email form.

Summary

Spelling software is useful for kids, teenagers and adults alike. Ultimate Spelling uses a range of engaging exercises and fun games to improve spelling skills while improving vocabulary and teaching users about the meaning, origins and pronunciation of words. TopTenReviews concluded that very young children are unlikely to get the most benefit out of this program, but many older children and young adults will find it an engaging and highly educational piece of software.

Many ESL students consider the English language to be both hard and unpredictable. The primary reason for this is its spelling rules — or rather the lack thereof. Spelling troubles native speakers and ESL learners of English alike because it poses great challenges. One main reason for this is the fact that English words are often not pronounced the way they are spelled; there’s no conformity or any seeming agreement between orthography and pronunciation. There’s a famous poem attributed to Richard Krogh that perfectly encapsulates this arbitrariness of the English spelling, and here’s an excerpt that shows just some of the spelling/pronunciation mismatches in the language:

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble, but not you
On hiccough, thorough, slough, and through?

Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps?
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird.

The English language has been called challenging by many people around the world, and the less charitable also call it “absurd” in view of its spelling idiosyncrasies.

That’s why many people turn to spelling programs to improve their spelling skills. The mere fact that adults as well as children seek to hone their spelling skills is proof that learning to spell is indeed a big challenge. Ultimate Spelling is a spelling solution offered to people worldwide. Several reviewers of the program reveal whether it’s a worthwhile investment.

Top Ten Reviews’ verdict: Ultimate Spelling™ worthy of No. 1 spot

The editors at Top Ten Reviews have recently released a series of spelling software reviews. Among several other spelling programs, Ultimate Spelling™ was part of the review lineup. This program ended up at the top position thanks to its combination of cutting-edge technology and user-friendliness — a unique combination of features that guarantees spelling mastery.

Among the other software reviewed, like Spelling Made Simple, Spell Track and Spelling Blaster, Ultimate Spelling™ stood out with its 140,000 word database and its plethora of games, activities, and lessons people can learn to spell with.

The software ratings by Top Ten Reviews make immediately evident the many ways that Ultimate Spelling™ is effectively without a rival. As the editors at Top Ten Reviews conclude, “This spelling software is the best program for kids, teenagers and even adults.”

Vocabulary.co.il: “Ultimate Spelling is learning to spell made very simple.”

Another respected English language site, Vocabulary.co.il, has offered an assessment of Ultimate Spelling™’s efficiency and suitability in teaching spelling to young and older learners.

Pointing out the necessity for perfect spelling skills in today’s world, the Vocabulary.co.il editors explain that among many spelling software products they tried, only Ultimate Spelling™ is suitable for learners of all ages and spelling levels.

The reviewers at Vocabulary.co.il explain that Ultimate Spelling™ perfectly combines learning with fun. This ensures the user stays motivated and inspired to keep practicing with Ultimate Spelling™ until they truly master spelling skills.

The program features an impressive word database of more than 140,000 words, and many activities and courses to ensure that no matter what level a user is on, or which learning needs they have to reach their goals, they can find compelling practice material to boost their spelling skills with.

Both reviews by Vocabulary.co.il and TopTenReviews illustrate that Ultimate Spelling™ is a well-designed software that presents cutting-edge features aimed at accelerating the learning process and giving users the essential linguistic arsenal to become competent users of the English language.

Have you ever stopped to think about your writing skills? If you have, your first thought was probably the words of your favorite (or least favorite) English teacher who was always scolding you about something. Was it word choice? Your lack of orthography skills?

For many people vocabulary and spelling are the two issues that tend to ruin otherwise well-crafted content. If you’re one of these people, you’ll definitely identify with the problems discussed in this article. For example, you may be frustrated by misspellings that seem to appear in your writing no matter how careful you are and how thoroughly you proofread afterward. It’s hard to understand how you can be a good writer and still mix up words that are spelled with only one letter difference, words such as “complement” and “compliment.” If you’re truly frustrated it’s because the mistakes just seem to go on and on.

This frustration is even worse, now that writers are so much in the public eye, and where every piece of digital information we put out there gets scrutinized – often harshly – by others. It’s important that what we put out there for the entire world to see is of the utmost quality. It’s sometimes impossible to find misspellings and misused vocabulary if you don’t have an eye for it. Thankfully, spellcheckers and online grammar services help many people avoid such awkward and embarrassing mistakes.

Or do they? Actually, these computer tools do not provide a long-term sustainable solution. You cannot rely on others to proofread your work. It’s not good to depend on outside editors, whether real people or word processing functions. In fact, it can cost you a lot of money and time in the end.

The trick is to improve your spelling and vocabulary skills once and for all. To enhance your editing skills you should try taking a language class at your community center or local college.

You can also invest in a more discreet, DIY solution: a language improvement program to build your vocabulary and enhance your spelling skills at the same time.

A good vocabulary building software program will help you enrich your vocabulary with new words and concepts for better communication. It will also ensure you learn the correct spelling of these new words, and completely master the orthography of the words whose definition you already know.

So if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to improve your editing skills so that your online and offline writing doesn’t suffer (and make English teachers furious) then invest in a vocabulary builder like Ultimate Vocabulary to expand your working lexicon and improve your orthography skills.

When good vocabulary and spelling skills are in place, you will be able to quickly and effectively proofread your own writing and get rid of embarrassing language usage errors before they’re published for all the world to see.

Don’t forget that polished, error-free online content promotes you as an authority in your niche and makes people value you, and what you contribute, online and through your business.

Language is magic. Being a living entity, language is the playground for wit, creativity, debate, and passionate banter. It never ceases to evolve, and the words that people create are a constant surprise. Spelling bees serve to demonstrate language mastery, but how often do you come across spelling bees on newly-created tech, urban slang and web buzzwords?

Urban Dictionary is an open web-based dictionary where anyone can input a word and its definition. The words are, for the most part, slang words – the category of words that tend to evolve the most quickly. This online dictionary has more than 7 million definitions and word descriptions that are predominantly witty, pop-culture terms and concepts. One of these words, “brofessional,” refers to a young man dedicated to “bro-only” activities, like partying, gaming, and flirting. Another newly-coined word is “cleptopenia,” the unconscious and unintended stealing of pens at schools, public services and corporate settings.

The 2014 spelling bee champions from this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe, were called upon by Mashable.com to spell some of the made-up words found in Urban Dictionary.

The two young men (future brofessionals?) successfully spelled “cleptopenia,” and then were asked to spelling the word “Googleheimer.” They spelled this word correctly, too. In case you were wondering, “Googleheimer” means the situation when you want to Google something but by the time you have access to a computer you no longer remember what you wanted to Google.

“Crowny,” a word that describes an object or person that’s highly desirable or of premium quality (that is, deserving the status of being or belonging to royalty), was another Urban Dictionary word successfully spelled by one of the two spelling champions.

“Procrastineating”, “Feeling Drake” and “textpectation” were three more words that challenged Sriram and Ansun. The two proved their spelling skills mastery once again, managing to correctly spell these urban slang words. Although the definition of many of these was rather hard to guess, Sriram and Ansun proved that spelling skills help you estimate new words’ orthography with a high percentage of accuracy.

This video shows the two spelling champs using their spelling-honed deductive skills and showing off their abilities, something that should inspire anyone who has a hard time figuring out the spelling of these or other words.

Urban Dictionary words reflect the wit, creativity and ever-changing status of the English language. Technology has given a lot of new official and informal words and concepts. For instance, “PHOBAR” is an acronym for Photoshopped Beyond All Recognition, a word meant to describe images of people that are circulating in social media where the images have been heavily manipulated and airbrushed so that the person in the picture is hardly recognizable.

Can you guess the meaning of the words “snowhawk” and “professional celebrity” – and could you spell them correctly, too?

Everyone knows what a “typo” is, I’m sure. I make them all the time when I’m typing too fast or if I am too far away from the screen. And newspapers and websites make them, too: small typos that somehow or other worm their way into the printed text or the pixels on the screen.

Sometimes normal run-of-the-mill typos are the work of newsroom gremlins or digital ghosts; at other times, they are the handiwork of humans. And as such, they can be fixed.

But a new kind of “typo” has surfaced since newspapers went digital this century, and they are called “atomic typos.” The word was coined in 2002. A good definition might go like this: An atomic typo is a typo is spelled correctly but used in the wrong way or wrong context.

Some examples: ”nuclear” instead of ”unclear”, ”accept” instead of ”except”, ”abroad” instead of ”aboard”, ”Sudan” instead of ”sedan.”

Even in our high-tech digital world, most context-challenged spell-check systems are unable to detect an atomic typo because, well, it just can’t. And why are they specifically called “atomic” typos?

Apparently because the mistakes are so small or minute, like an atomic particle.

The term “atomic typo” has been used in computerized newsrooms for just over 10 years or so, although its use as a printing term in common conversation and news articles is very rare. In fact, you might be hearing it for the first time here. I just learned about the term a few years ago.

In plain English, an atomic typo is a very small, one-letter typographic mistake that ends up making a big difference in the meaning of a specific sentence. It could even impact an entire news article, too. Machines cannot detect the error. Only the human eye, in connection with the human brain, can do it. So much for spell check.

More examples of atomic typos that appear in English-language newspapers worldwide every day: ”county” for ”country”, ”’peace” for ”piece”, ”game” for ”name”, ”sox” for ”box”, and so on.

Spell check just cannot see these mistakes, and with fewer and fewer copy editors and proofreaders working these days, atomic typos are just par for the coarse now. Oops: I meant to type “course,” of course. See?

So the next time you see news about a government-funded study titled “Unclear Physics,” just remember the author probably meant to write “Nuclear Physics” — or did she?

Are you a good speller? If you said “yes” then you’re already far ahead of the crowd – these days, not many people are confident or proud of their spelling skills. Heavy users of texting abbreviations and internet lingo in particular often feel their spelling skills have become somewhat rusty.

That’s why there’s a definite shift towards the use of spelling software, programs that help people improve their current skills, or learn how to spell starting with the basics.

Ultimate Spelling™ is one such spelling improvement solution that helps people master this essential skill. A variety of impartial reviews on Ultimate Spelling™ make it immediately evident that Ultimate Spelling™ can help people master orthography in little time and with minimum effort.

Ultimate Spelling™ receives 2014 Excellence Award by TopTenReviews

TopTenReviews is an opinion leader in software reviews, trusted by thousands of readers worldwide. Ultimate Spelling™ along with 8 other spelling improvement software went under rigorous scrutiny by the TopTenReviews editors. The evaluations culminated with the release of the TopTenReviews rankings and awards.

eReflect’s Ultimate Spelling™ was awarded the top place along with the company’s Gold Award and the 2014 Award of Excellence. Ultimate Spelling™’s competition made do with the second and third places, confirming the effectiveness of Ultimate Spelling™ in improving people’s orthography quickly and effortlessly.

The combination of cutting-edge tools, a personalized learning approach, and a dictionary-size word database were some of the reasons why Ultimate Spelling™ was awarded the TopTenReviews 2014 Excellence award. The editors at TopTenReviews gave Ultimate Spelling™ a score of 9.88, with a 10/10 rating for its progress tracking report technology and range of features.

Vocabulary learning site heaps praise on Ultimate Spelling™ for its effectiveness

While TopTenReviews was conferring excellence awards to the spelling improvement software by eReflect, the editors at Vocabulary.co.il (part of the Vkids company) were preparing their own review of the software.

As the editors note in their introduction, text-speak has made many people sloppy language users and this can have its toll on how efficiently people use language, in speech as well as in writing.

To offset bad spelling skills and habits, Vocabulary.co.il suggests trying Ultimate Spelling™. Their review of Ultimate Spelling™ ends with this quote: “Whichever way you look at it, Ultimate Spelling is learning to spell made very simple, and does exactly what it says on the packet.”

The Ultimate Spelling™ reviewers analysed the program’s features and integrated technology, focusing on its progress tracking tool and its all-encompassing approach to learning spelling, one that caters to young spellers as well as adults.

Its comprehensiveness and rigorous no-nonsense approach to spelling mastery are two other features of the Ultimate Spelling™ the review praised. In fact, Vocabulary.co.il made a point to recommend using Ultimate Spelling™ for learning how to spell, in view of its breadth of activities and structured yet customizable learning experience.

What seems to have impressed many reviewers of Ultimate Spelling™, Vocabulary.co.il included, is the sheer size of its word database (over 142,000 words, more than any other software reviewed). What seems to be even more impressive to most reviewers is the program’s in-depth approach to word mastery.

The program doesn’t simply teach the spelling of a word and stop there. It allows the learner to truly master a word by offering more information about the word, not just its spelling. The user is provided a chance to learn the word’s pronunciation and its definition(s), and the system even offers multiple usage examples for each word so that the learner can confidently and correctly use the words they’re learning to spell.
