What do you do when you have children who can read, but just won’t? Is a love for reading something parents and teachers can inspire in children, or is reading something we’re born to like or dislike?

To encourage your child to love and enjoy reading you first need to understand the factors that may be preventing them from enjoying reading.

More appealing pastimes

It’s no wonder that children prefer to play video games, chat with friends or just watch TV – these are more enjoyable activities because they don’t require much effort.

To make reading a more appealing alternative to video games why not introduce them to foolproof, age-appropriate, best-sellers? You can even start out with book that inspired a child’s favorite movie or television program. Before you know it, your child will be writing fan-fiction on their favorite books.

Boring, uninspiring books

Children don’t like wasting their time on things that are irrelevant or just plain boring, and who can blame them? Adults don’t either. Rev up the interest factor by trying out different genres and media for reading until you find what works for each child. For example, getting them an e-reader, so similar to the tablets they use for playing games, might motivate a child to read more.

Difficult and frustrating

If your child is having reading difficulties this will naturally draw them away from reading. Talk with the child’s teacher and focus on identifying and/or ruling out any learning difficulties. Ask the teacher if they have suggestions for a course of action that would help the child get interested in reading.

Often something as simple as assigning a purpose to reading (e.g. learning about how planets form) will make the activity seem more meaningful and appealing.

Cultivate a love for reading

It’s actually easy to get your child to enjoy reading. Here are the five first basic steps to achieve this:

1) Recommend reading material based on things you know they already like. If that’s Batman, give them lots of comic books to start reading.

2) Be a role model. Don’t sit with a tablet in one hand and your smartphone in the other. Read books, magazines, and newspapers. Put new books and journals in places your child usually hangs out. Even if it’s just out of curiosity, they will at least skim through an article or chapter!

3) Organize activities around reading, like frequent library visits. Join a parent-child book club, play reading-related games like spelling games, and make family evenings together the time to bring out word board games like Scrabble.

4) If your child is young enough for bedtime stories, make a habit out of it. Reading out loud will get your child to grow fond of reading and ask for more material to read on their own.

5) Start building a home library with books you read together. This will be soon considered an ongoing, open-ended project where newly read books will be added to an ever-growing library.

When you are writing your thesis, it is not uncommon to become overwhelmed by the sheer amount of organization and sections involved with the format. In order to keep you from feeling too much stress from the writing process of your thesis, we’ve gathered five tips of things you must know when you are writing.

Three Questions You Should Ask Yourself

When you are first formulating your thesis, there are three things you should ask yourself so make sure you are on the right track. Once you have gathered your thesis statement you should ask three questions. These three questions are:

1) Is my thesis statement general or specific? : You want to make sure that your thesis statement is very specific. Not only to make it clear and to the point, but a specific thesis statement will allow you to stay within the strict formatting. Getting to the point of your thesis is what the dissertation is about. If you make a statement that is too general you will not have success in sticking to the style format and explaining or proving your statement. An example of comparing specific and non-specific statements would be:

Non-Specific: “People are more likely to object to horror films than they did before.”

Specific: “The horror films of today do not provide audiences the same emotional catharsis as the horror films of the 1930’s-1950’s.”

2) Is my thesis statement clear? To be sure you are very clear with your thesis statement, follow these tips:

– Do not use technical language (unless your dissertation is based on a technical subject).
– Do not use jargon.
– Do not use words that are vague – (interesting, unusual, negative, exciting, difficult, etc.)
– Do not use abstract words – (culture, society, values, etc.)

Did I make sure my thesis is original? Originality is absolutely essential. In all cases you should avoid formula sentences and generic arguments.

Placing the Thesis Statement

While you will follow a specific structure, you need to be aware of the placement of the thesis statement. The purpose of the thesis statement will structure the entire dissertation. Your thesis statement should appear at the beginning. The statement should be in the introduction or the last sentence of the paragraph. You should also keep in mind that your thesis statement should be no more than two sentences long.

In addition, your thesis should not be a question. Thesis statements are designed to ask questions, not be one.

The Topic is Important

While it might seem obvious, you should be careful when choosing your topic. If you are writing an educational subject, make sure the topic is something you are very well versed in and have a lot of knowledge about. In contrast, if you are writing an objective dissertation, make sure that you choose a topic that you are passionate about.

Throughout the thesis, it is important to remember:

– do not bring in ideas or topics that will not be discussed.
– Do not write in first person
– Avoid being combative.

Strict Structure is a Must

Depending on the institution or department you are a part of will determine the style manuals that you can choose from. Most often your committee, board, or any other dissertation writing services will advise you to use the style that is most popular or most often used in your field of study. You should follow their guidance to ensure you start off writing your thesis in the correct format for your department.

Once you have chosen a style manual that is the structure you will need to follow throughout the entire thesis writing and formatting. It is absolutely vital to stick to the strict structuring in order to follow the guidelines of your department and for easy binding as well.

When you format your thesis the following items will need to be assured that they are in accordance to the manual style:

Font (styles and sizes)
Margins and spacing
Page numbering
Citations
Using tables, charts, pictures, etc.
Using bibliographies
Implementing a table of contents

In addition, you will need to follow the exact layout of the manual style you have chosen. For the most part, manual styles will provide a layout such as:

Cover or title page
Copyrights
Section of Acknowledgements
Table of Contents
List of any: charts, tables, illustrations, graphs, etc.
Preface – if you are using one
Actual text of your thesis (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion)
Bibliographies
Appendices (if applicable)

Drafts and Reviews

When you are drafting your thesis it is not uncommon for your view to change slightly. This happens naturally as you learn more about the subject and discover more in your research. If you find this happening to you, adjust accordingly to ensure you do not stray from your original thesis with the supporting information in your paragraphs.

You will also write several drafts to make sure the final product is perfect. Along the way you need to make sure of:

Spelling errors
Grammatical errors
Overall flow of the dissertation
Making sure to connect ideas or facts appropriately so your thesis is not disjointed
Analyze your thesis to make sure you avoid mistakes that will weaken the thesis statement.

Once you have had the chance to draft your thesis and make adjustments accordingly, give yourself time to read it out loud. When you read it out loud, you will hear the flow of your thesis and it will be clear if it is making sense or is suddenly disjointed. Reading it out loud will also allow you to see the strength of your argument and you can adjust as needed. After you are sure you are happy with the final result, turn it in- and be sure to turn it in on time!

You’ve heard about BYOB, something that often makes parties more fun (and certainly livelier!). But have you heard about BYOD? It’s a new program that 5th grade students are participating in at Ely Elementary School in Elyria, Ohio, called “Bring Your Own Device.” Rather than banning cell phones, smartphones, laptops, and e-readers from the classroom, kids are encouraged to bring their devices to school and use them in the specially-designed classroom activities. For children who don’t have their own devices, the school provides them, and there are 15 wi-fi hotspots in the school. The students use their devices for math class geometry, social studies research, and reading practice. It’s encouraging productive interaction, which is helping the students learn how to work collaboratively on tasks. Teachers enjoy the fact that even if students are still texting to each other during class time, at least now it’s messages and questions about the project they’re working on together.

Ely Elementary is one of the latest schools to implement this pilot program, also known as BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology). Schools from Arizona to Florida are rolling out their own versions of the program, though there is no one national trend yet. However, most school districts have websites – using technology to promote technology – to share tips and experiences to help their colleagues across the country. Schools in the UK and Australia are also considering joining the movement.

Because kids in the 21st century are growing up surrounded by technology, it only makes sense to incorporate it into their lives and studies in a way that makes it productive. If you know a student who doesn’t enjoy reading books, see if using an e-reader changes their attitude. Spelling games can turn quizzes into entertainment, and even simply using computer game time as a reward for a good study session can motivate students to learn. With all of the e-books available with one click of the mouse, you might find that kids are eager to choose from the wide variety of e-books they can find through online stores like Amazon or through your local library. If you can see that your kids are having fun using technology, then it makes sense to use technology to help them have fun reading and learning.

Writing skills are a must when it comes to office correspondence. Most people take a casual approach to writing memos, interoffice notes, emails or anything else that their peers and managers read. This can prove to be a mistake that is hampering your chances for advancement or a raise.

This should not come as a surprise. Office communication often starts with an email or a memo and serves as a first impression in many cases. Research shows that 70% of people interact with business associates via email before they ever get a chance to meet in person.

This is why written office communications are a slippery slope. They set the tone for most of the interactions you have at work. You might feel the need to be funny or friendly, especially if you’re writing to a colleague you interact with often. Avoid doing that because office communications are monitored and you never know who else might be reading your emails.

Be clear and concise

Regardless of what type of document you are writing, make sure it is easy to understand and that it gets straight to the point whenever possible. The best way to ensure your writing is clear is to know what you want to say before you sit down to write it. If you’re not sure about what you’re saying, how can a person reading your email or a proposal be?

Use proper vocabulary

This is an important one. First off, refrain from using abbreviations or street jargon, and makes you look unprofessional. Also, consider the audience. You can get technical with your peers and colleagues if they are working in the same department and have the same background as you. However, refrain from using technical terms if you’re uncertain that everyone who needs to read it will be able to follow. If they are absolutely essential, make sure to include an explanation of terms in an appendix.

Also, make sure to proofread everything. Frequent grammar and spelling errors will start hurting your credibility and, while your colleagues might get a laugh out of them, you’re hardly doing yourself any favors in front of your boss.

Also, you can check out some of these online writing tools. Using them will help you communicate more effectively and even teach you a thing or two.

Grammarly – Use Grammarly to check your grammar, spelling and punctuation. Bad writing skills are a sure way of undermining your authority so make sure you’re sending out proofread and spell-checked writing. This free tool will make all that easier for you.

Thesaurus – If you’re writing a lot of emails, chances are your writing is drab and boring and that you’re using the same words all the time. Using this online tool will help you expand your vocabulary and find the right words for your content.

Gorgias – Gorgias allows you create email templates and works with Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo. If you’re losing time on writing, essentially, the same stuff, kick up your productivity with Gorgias and start sending out emails written in just a few keystrokes.

AussieWriter – Sometimes, your writing skills just won’t be good enough. Whether it’s an extensive business plan, a speech or a client pitch, you will have to enlist someone to help you out. AussieWriter is a reputable writing service that can get the job done affordably and quickly.

Enloop – If you need some help with writing a killer business plan, this online tool will prove to be a great asset. It automates the process, and gives you a step-by-step plan to follow that will eventually result in a great business proposal.

MailMentor – MailMentor is a free online tool you can use to check the readability of your emails. It will let you know if your writing is too long, too complex, or too difficult to read and offer actionable advice on how you can improve it.

Stick to the point

When writing an email, think of a single point you want to communicate and stick with it. If you need to have a lengthy discussion with someone, either schedule a meeting or set up a call, don’t write a mile-long email. This is because busy people don’t have time to read your musings. When you start veering off the topic, they start losing interest.

Include a clear call to action

Sometimes you want people to react to an email or an internal memo a certain way. Most people assume others will know how to react. Don’t bet on it. Include a clear call to action, specifying what the next steps are and are there any deadlines to be respected. Removing guesswork out of the equation gets things done much faster.

Be courteous but professional

Don’t allow your emails to saw discord and start office-wide hostilities. Always maintain a professional and courteous tone throughout your written communication. If you have some bad new to deliver, think about doing it in person or in a call. If you have something unpleasant to write to a colleague or a subordinate, make sure to do it in a tactful and unaggressive way.

A bit of courtesy will get you a long way, but avoid getting too personal or friendly in written communication, regardless of how well you might know someone. It gives an impression that you cannot separate your personal from your professional life and reflects poorly on you.

These tips will help you communicate better in both your professional and personal life. They will also go a long way in making sure that everything is communicated in a clear manner so to avoid any misunderstandings.

There’s so much talk these days about the best ways to advance career prospects and what the best course of action to take is that it’s easy to get lost in the sea of advice. eReflect, dedicated to providing self-development software, also supports people in their efforts to sharpen their skills and acquire new ones. The company knows that by doing so, people have a better chance at succeeding in today’s cut-throat job market.

Among the many skills people are expected to master by the time they professionally enter the job market, eReflect finds that vocabulary, spelling, and touch typing are in most employers’ “Top Ten” lists when it comes to skills that catch their eye in the hiring process. This is not solely eReflect’s opinion, but something that has been established as a given in the 21st century socioeconomic landscape.

eReflect has been witnessing a steady growth since it was established back in 2006 with its first and most successful self-improvement software, Ultimate Vocabulary™. Today, 10 years later, eReflect serves customers from over 110 countries, helping young people and adults master essential 21st century skills for better career prospects and more fulfilling lives. eReflect is now a leader in the self-development software niche.

Building an armor of words – Ultimate Vocabulary™

People often fail to appreciate the importance of a rich vocabulary in the workplace. They believe that skills like assertiveness and confidence are the only traits they need to stay ahead of the game. But the truth is, without basic skills such as an extended, up to date, and relevant vocabulary it’s easy to lose the competitive edge against candidates and colleagues with more eloquence.

Ultimate Vocabulary™ helps you build a strong vocabulary that makes others notice you. A vocabulary that has a positive impact on people instantly increases and enhances your career prospects and your promotion potential.

People’s first impression of you is largely based on your word choice, so by making those first words count, you’re getting a head start, leaving others lagging behind with clichés and gobbledygook while you speak with intention, accuracy and large-scale impact.

Here are some of the main benefits of a rich, robust vocabulary can bring to your career prospects:

– You’ll have top-notch communication skills, both face-to-face and in email, video conferencing and more.

– Your communication skills will give you credibility, authority and respect. Having other people respect and admire you gives you the competitive advantage over less assertive colleagues.

– Your authority and the respect you get from others means that you’ll always stand out from the crowd.

Do you ever wonder why inspiring speakers are often called charismatic? They have the ability and talent to persuade and move others with their mere choice of words. By building your vocabulary you are effectively gathering a strong arsenal you can draw upon in the right circumstances to bring forth the right effect.

These are but a few reasons why you should consider improving your vocabulary with a program designed according to scientific evidence on lexical capacity and acquisition and with integrated technologies to accelerate learning without minimizing effectiveness and overall knowledge retention.

When vocabulary just doesn’t cut it – Ultimate Spelling™

Building a strong vocabulary is not always enough. Without orthography skills, people you are communicating with electronically will be distracted by your misspellings and cringe each time you spell simple words wrong, such as mixing up “you’re” and “your.” While these errors can be sometimes overlooked, your communication will suffer from a lack of accuracy and understanding when you have problems with more difficult words like “affect” vs. “effect” or the easily-confused word pair “principle” and “principal.”

eReflect has created a software product that helps children and adults learn spelling in a way that’s not boring and tedious but time-efficient and fun. Through a series of handpicked and well-designed spelling activities and games a learner can gradually improve their spelling skills and become a person that can write professionally and without any mistakes.

While spelling is not the be-all and end-all of a job search, a resume marred by misspellings and typos (more on that later) is bound to land your application in the “not worth bothering with” pile.

If you’re wondering why spelling is so important — or if you think it’s not important at all — let us convince you otherwise.

Spelling and vocabulary are interconnected. If you know the meaning of one word but cannot spell it, you don’t really know it.

To completely know a word you must be able to use it equally well both in conversation and in written communication. Good spelling is invisible, in a way: nobody notices your spelling skills unless you don’t have them.

So what does it mean to have great spelling skills?

Well-prepared

You’re equipped with an indispensable skill for college and for job hunting later on. Employees assume the people they hire have mastered such basic skills. You’d be surprised, however, at the number of spelling errors found in official reports and other corporate publications.

Spelling is, in a sense, the key to a company’s quality. If your brand has certain qualities you need to emphasize, don’t sabotage those with misspellings.

Credibility

Spelling ascribes credibility and leadership to your writing and, by extension, you. People won’t take you seriously if you cannot write an error-free report or email.

Good spelling skills infuse your professional image with positive traits: credibility, trustworthiness, authority, professionalism — the list is endless.

Why use Ultimate Spelling™ though?

Ultimate Spelling™ has been designed with effectiveness in mind. It’s free of those factors that sabotage learning, like uninspiring, tedious activities. It abandons useless passive learning techniques, and instead is equipped with star-studded features and practice material.

With Ultimate Spelling you can improve your orthography through interactive games and intuitive tools like a word explorer, and use cutting-edge technologies for progress monitoring to achieve better results.

What makes Ultimate Spelling™ different from anything else is the level of personalization it lends itself to. The software can be as appealing to a 4-year-old as it is to a 44-year old wishing to spruce up their spelling skills.

Who doesn’t like learning through play?

Click, Clack, Click-Click, Clack

That’s the sound of you touch typing. Ever wonder how often you touch type on your keyboard?

An increasing number of people are using mobile touch-screen devices for all of their personal and work-related tasks: emailing, shopping, chatting, international meetings, and even legal negotiations.

In fact, in 2016 it is expected that over 3.5 million mobile devices will be purchased and used. Our growing dependence on mobile, Internet-enabled devices means we need to become efficient users. One basic skill that helps with this is touch typing – the ability to type not only quickly, but accurately too.

Technology and research companies predict that it won’t be long before mobile devices outnumber people. At this point, it is forecast that in 2014 there will be more than 7.3 billion active cell phones on the planet. Tablets, PCs, and smartphones are proliferating at an accelerated rate as well.

So why stay behind with a peck and hunt typing method when you can type at a professional level at more than 80 words per minute?

eReflect comes to the rescue once more.

Typesy™ uses the latest technology to help you improve your typing skills through video tutorials that are easy to follow and intuitive. It’s like having a personal tutor at your service.

Wondering what the perks of touch typing mastery are?

– You’ll save up to 47 hours a month. That’s a big deal. Depending on the amount of touch typing you do each day, you can save literally two days a month just by typing faster and more accurately!

– You’ll avoid common computer-related health issues. Touch typing is not only about typing super fast and error-free, it’s about sustainable and healthy typing habits. Typesy™ teaches you ergonomic techniques so that you can spare yourself from painful, irritating problems like carpal tunnel syndrome and RSI.

The world is taking large strides towards an overwhelmingly tech-driven society. Skills like touch typing and proper spelling are indispensable, especially in the fiercely competitive job market young people are getting in today, where the jobs are scarce and the requirements are numerous.

Build your vocabulary and improve your spelling skills; achieve a new touch typing word-per-minute record, and see your career prospects catapult to unimaginable new levels!

Have you ever thought about the importance of your workplace organization?

More often than not, people don’t pay attention to their workplace at all. There might be dirty cups and piles of drafts that make your writing surface messy. Maybe the walls are painted color that negatively affects your mood. If you look around, you’ll likely see that some aspect of your workplace leaves much to be desired.

However, workplace organization is not just about looking neat and tidy. There are many reasons to get in the habit of keeping your workplace organized. But before you check the top 15 reasons listed below, take a look at the infographic about workplace organization by OmniPapers.

It is not only interesting but useful as well, so save it and print to get the most out of it later.

Increase Productivity

The fewer distractions you have, the more productive you are. Obviously, the less time you waste looking for things on your messy table the better. Start using drawers and lockers to organize your notes, drafts, and books.

Boost Brain Functions

If your workplace is well-organized, you’ll have time to take more breaks. Take five minutes to drink a cup of green tea. It contains L-theanine that calms your body and boosts brain functions. After drinking green tea, you’ll be relaxed and more focused, and it will be easier to work harder then.

Stick to a Schedule

When you have an organized workplace, it’s easier to organize your life, too. Many people agree that sticking to a schedule is key to a productive working process. Make a plan that includes time for work as well as time for relaxation.

Get the Most Out of Modern Gadgets

Since you’re living in the digital age, make the most of it. There are many modern gadgets that are designed to help writers become more productive. For example, a digital highlighter or a smart pen help to translate and transfer texts. Make a space in your workplace for these device and increase productivity.

Start Writing Faster

Most people know that writing skills need to be perfected. Obviously, a well-organized workplace helps you stay focused, which means you can write more smoothly and quickly. If you do your writing at a computer keyboard, make sure you have the touch typing skills you need to keep up with your thoughts.

Hone Your Writing Skills

Using modern gadgets, investing in online tools and apps, increasing your typing speed, and boosting creativity all help to hone your writing skills. When your workplace is organized, you’ll find that pulling all of these components together is easier, and leads to faster improvement in your skills.

Generate Content Ideas

When you are inspired and motivated, it’s easier to boost creativity. A restful and inspiring workspace will help you come up with innovative and thoughtful ideas that suit your audience’s needs.

Keep Everything Next to You

Writers use many tools daily (notes, drafts, best practices lists, books, etc.). It might seem minor when it happen once, but each time you have to stop and look for one of these things you will be distracted from the working process. Keep everything you need close at hand.

Train Memory

Your brain can be organized, too. With a trained memory, you keep everything in mind and achieve better results. When you are organizing a workplace, think about stickers as a way to keep a back-up memory system. Post stickers with notes on the wall or calendar to keep all information close to you.

Draw Inspiration

It goes without saying that a good workplace has an inspirational corner. Here you can draw inspiration from things you like the most: paintings, quotes, books, music, or photos. Think about things that inspire you and add them to your workplace.

Stay Focused

Being a writer means analyzing your niche, generating ideas, writing articles, communicating with clients and audience, proofreading and editing, and more. Obviously, if you want to be a great writer, you need to learn how to stay focused. The most common way to do it is to organize your workplace to minimize distraction and time-wasting searches.

Improve Health

Be picky about your office stuff to prevent health problems. First of all, your office chair should be comfortable and ergonomic. Be sure it supports the lower back. In addition, many studies have concluded that sitting for long periods of time is bad for your health. Mix up the day to include physical activities while working.

Read “Posture and Ergonomics Improvement Tips” now to learn more about proper ergonomics.

Prevent Eyesight Problems

Proper illumination at your workplace helps to prevent eyesight problems. Choose a desk lamp with light level adjustment, and think about getting a lamp that mimics natural sunlight, if you live in the north. Keeping the light level up will stimulate your brain to keep working, even after the sun goes down.

Create a Better Work Environment

A positive work environment affects your productivity, mood, and well-being in general. If you want to achieve success in your career, you need to create a great work environment, and workplace organization is the key!

Improve the Quality of Your Life

When you are productive and work efficiently, you have enough time to spend on yourself, with friends, and with your family. When your personal life is full of happiness and cheer, you will take that positive energy with you back to the workplace, whether that’s at a desk at home or an office in the city.

Most people don’t think that workplace organization plays a role in career development, but we claim that it does matter. If these reasons are not enough for you to agree with our point of view, drop us a line with your comments and ideas.

Nowadays when we communicate in writing, it seems we pay less attention to things like spelling and punctuation. But in many types of correspondence, especially professional correspondence, proper spelling and grammar matter. That’s why the ability to touch type accurately is so important. Of course, there are times when the environment is more casual, such as in e-mails or on-line chat rooms, but even then, it’s better to avoid typos, because that will help you avoid misunderstandings too. And if you’re chatting with people you’d like to have (or keep) as friends, your good typing skills will also help you give a good impression of your competence and intelligence.

You can easily use any material to practice your typing accuracy using a basic word processing program, but if you do, make sure to turn any “auto-correct” features off before you begin. It’s also helpful to try to avoid using the [Backspace] key when you’re testing yourself on accuracy. While it’s perfectly all right to delete mistakes in typing, you’ll get a better sense of your true overall typing accuracy without it.

Just remember that to increase touch typing accuracy, you may need to decrease speed. And that’s okay. Speed will improve with practice, and so will accuracy. The computer generated activities you’ll find in Typesy’s Accuracy Building Course will help you achieve your goal of making fewer touch typing mistakes. All you need to do is follow the instructions on screen as they are presented. You can repeat the accuracy building course as many time as you like. Each time you repeat it your accuracy will improve.

When you’re typing, you need to watch out for those inadvertent slips of the finger that create typos – misspelled words that you might not catch with your computer spellchecker because the misspelling actually creates a new word that’s correctly spelled, but not at all the word you meant to use. For example, if you mistype the word complaint as compliant your computer won’t flag that as a mistake, but your readers certainly will!

You need to also watch out for “audible typos” when you’re speaking, to make sure that you don’t use words with similar appearance and pronunciation incorrectly. Sometimes words that are easy to mistype or misspell don’t cause problems when you’re speaking, because the pronunciation of the words is so different. It’s not likely that you’ll say the word complaint (pronounced kuhm-PLAYNT, “a stated grievance or disapproval of a situation”) instead of the word compliant (pronounced kuhm-PLY-uhnt, “easy-going, agreeable”) because the words are not really alike in pronunciation, even though the spellings are almost identical.

On the other hand, the words credible and creditable are probably easier to misuse when speaking than when writing or typing, because there’s an extra set of letters in the second word. This also creates an extra syllable, but since it’s not emphasized, it’s easy to slur over it and confuse the two words. Credible is pronounced KREH-dih-bull and means “believable, trustworthy.” Creditable is pronounced KREH-dih-tah-bull and means “deserving of praise.”

Keep your eyes open to watch out for spelling mistakes and your ears open to avoid pronunciation mistakes, and you’ll be sure to speak and type typo-free!

Spelling is fun. Really, it is! But if you find spelling practice boring or repetitive, it’s probably because you’re using the wrong activities. Here are some ways to spice up your spelling practice and become a Master Speller in no time.

Word Sorting: Learn Words in Groups

To learn difficult or hard to remember spellings you can practice word sorting. Word sorting helps you develop phonemic awareness so that you can know how a sound translates into a word.

For instance, phonemic awareness lets you know that the letter A has two pronunciations. Sometimes it’s pronounced with a short vowel sound (as in ‘mat’) and sometimes with a long vowel sound (as in ‘gate’), but in both cases it’s simply written as the letter ‘a.’

Another example is grouping words by their suffixes, or other similar characteristics. You might make up a list with a group of words ending in the letters –cious. You could also choose to learn a list of words where the letter K is silent, as in ‘knight’ and ‘knee.’

When you truly understand spelling patterns, you will be able to apply these when spelling unknown words. One such spelling pattern could be the soft and hard G.

The letter G is pronounced “hard” in words such as gate, gap, goat and grow but “soft” in words such as gym and giraffe.

You can learn this sound-letter pattern with this rule:

When followed by A, O, or U, the G is pronounced with a “hard” sound.

When G is followed by I or E or Y, then the sound is “soft.”

Knowing these letter patterns helps you correctly guess the spelling of an unknown word when you hear it pronounced out loud. You will be able to decipher that the correct spelling of ‘gymnastics’ is with a G and not a J, because you’ll recognize the pattern and remember the rule.

This technique of word sorting can be applied to a number of spelling activities. You can learn spelling with groups of words like these:

1) Learning words ending in –at and –an, as in the case of ‘pat’ and ‘pan’

2) Words with a silent E such as ‘cake’, ‘love’, ‘dove’ and ‘jove’

3) Learning words with diphthongs, such as ‘oy’ and ‘ow’

4) Learning the difference between the long and short A sounds in words like ‘hat’ and ‘safe’

Spelling patterns help you make generalized rules on how spelling works. Implementing these rules, once you know them, helps you arrive at the correct spelling of new words.

Once your phonological awareness is expanded through this technique, you can start practicing with games and spelling activities to consolidate that knowledge.

Spelling Knowledge Consolidation: Spelling 24/7

In order for you to truly master spelling you need to practice in a consistent yet fun manner. In fact, you can incorporate spelling practice in almost everything you do! Here are some ways to do it:

Gather together newspaper clips or online content and look for spelling words you’ve learned in the previous week or two. Seeing words in context helps you form a mental image of the correctly-spelled word.

Create a story based on the words you’ve just learned, or use them to practice the one you learned a while back. Collect 5 to 10 words and create a short narrative with them. The more creative and funny the story, the more enjoyable this will be.

Shrink your spelling “black list” by studying your frequently misspelled words using a technique called “spelling stairs.” In this process, you start with the first letter, then add a single letter at a time until you form your word, like this:

T

Ta

Tab

Tabl

Table

Tablet

Play online spelling games and take advantage of the hundreds of spelling games that are variations of classic word games and spelling activities, like Scramble and Hangman. When you’re having fun, you’ll enjoy the practice, and you’ll spend more time at it.

Mnemonics: The Expert’s Technique

Invent mnemonics for tough words to help you remember them. Sometimes, no matter how much you study a word you always seem to get it wrong, and mnemonic techniques can help. For example, say you always misspell the word ‘dilemma.’ Create a mnemonic for it that helps you remember the correct spelling, like this one:

Emma faced a dilemma.

Here’s another example: you can memorize the sentence “Goofy George always exaggerates” to remember to spell ‘exaggerate’ with a double G.
